All about that base
Day 2
Here is: #Mug #2 - All about that base
Trimming the bottom of a mug is not the most straightforward task.
And to be honest, I curse and dread it each time. Lots of things can go wrong! It's all about securing the vessel on the wheel properly, centering it and trimming it at the perfect time, and if the clay is still too soft, the mug goes kaput!
The way I trim is more complicated, I use Hsinchuen Lin method. I use water to stick the vessel to the wheel, and after about a minute, it is secure and ready to be trimmed. I learned this method very early on, and do I enjoy trimming that way!
So to clarify, the reason I don't particularly like trimming the bottom is that I have in the past not picked the right time to trim and found that the clay was still too soft. I also had trouble using the trimming tools properly, either I ended up trimming the bottom away, or I destroyed the mug during the process.
The making of 100 mugs will require me to become better at it; they do say Repetition is the mother of skill.
